Borderers raise the roof to hail our key worker heroes

Cheers, applause, bell ringing and the clatter of wooden spoons on sauce pans could be heard across the region on Thursday evening as the Borderers once again showed its appreciation for health care workers.

Hundreds of Borderers paid tribute to NHS staff and key workers for helping to keep the country running during the coronavirus pandemic, taking to their windows, doorsteps, gardens and balconies for a fourth time since the lockdown came into place, to thank those fighting the virus as part of the #clapforcarers and #thankyouNHS initiative.

And for a third week running pipers across the area struck up their instruments too, blasting out Scotland the Brave in an also now-weekly ritual at 8pm.

In Galashiels, for a second week running the ringing of the old bell from Stow Church could be heard across the town, thanks to staff at Kilnknowe Park who, always looking to improve the on the previous week’s efforts, this time also clapped and sang along to Anita Ward’s pop song Ring my bell on loudspeaker.

Residents across Hawick, meanwhile, reckoned they could be heard ringing cowbells, cheering and clapping by those in Selkirk and Galashiels. Our photographer, meanwhile, was over in Melrose, Jedburgh and Newtown St Boswells capturing, from a safe distance, residents there joining in the applause.
