Argos set to reopen Galashiels store

Retailer Argos is to reopen its Galashiels store next Wednesday, September 9, despite rumours in the town that the shop was closed for good.

The Douglas Bridge shop has been closed since the start of lockdown, with potential customers being redirected to a click and collect store in Hawick by the Argos website, and social media posts have claimed the Galashiels shop wouldn’t be reopening.

However, a spokesperson for supermarket chain Sainsbury’s – which took over Argos in 2016 – told The Southern: “As we continue to learn how our customers want to shop with us we are progressing the phased reopening of Argos standalone stores and our Galashiels store will reopen next Wednesday, while keeping safety our highest priority.”

“Customers can find their nearest open store by visiting the store locator page on our website.

“We will keep our customers and colleagues updated on our plans.”

Galashiels and district councillor Euan Jardine had also contacted the firm, after being contacted by several residents.

He said: “I was getting a good few enquiries from people who feared the store was to remain closed.

“I’m very happy the store is opening up again.

“I can see why Argos is doing it like this ... the stores are being opened up in a controlled way. I have to praise them for taking their time and making sure it’s safe.

“As it’s one of the first shops you see when you come off the train in Galashiels, it’s kind of like the gateway to the town and it’s great that we have a national chain staying here.

“I was on the train yesterday and I noticed that more and more people are coming into the Borders ... some were coming into Galashiels for the day from Newtongrange ... and more shops being open here should see more of that happen.”
