David Mundell: Farming crisis must be dealt with

It was very significant to see farmers, including ones from this region, turn up at Holyrood on Thursday to voice their anger at the continuing payments crisis in the industry.

The Scottish Government have failed to get a grip on this from the outset and has left farmers facing a huge financial crisis, on top of the many other issues they have to deal with on a daily basis.

Whilst £200m of funding to help speed up payments was a welcome announcement by Nicola Sturgeon, it shows how the Scottish Government have completely panicked over this.

The rural economy has been devastated by the delays in these payments and with the busiest time of year now underway for the farming community, this situation must be sorted out once and for all.

It shows how much of a mess has been created when farmers are prepared to make lengthy journeys to the Scottish Parliament at the start of the lambing season.

With the Scottish Parliament set to break up on March 24, time is fast running out for the Scottish Government to ensure that our dedicated farmers receive their payments without any further delays.

West Linton success

My congratulations go to the pupils at West Linton Primary School who came out on top at a UK and Ireland wide technology competition recently.

The pupils known as the ‘West Linton Wasps’ showed off their creative side when they designed, built and programmed a robot to carry out a series of waste-related missions.

The team also produced a very innovative solution to the problem of pupils wasting vegetables at school lunch times.

Their scheme saw pupils receive tokens for eating vegetables and this resulted in a 47% reduction in wasted vegetables.

Credit goes to the ten pupils in the team who put in a terrific amount of effort to beat schools from across the UK and Ireland, after initially winning the Scottish heat in Dundee in January.

I wish them all the best for the world finals in St Louis later this year in America where I know they will do their school and community proud.
