One woman in “serious condition” after four-car A72 crash near Innerleithen

An inquiry is under way into the circumstances of a four-vehicle crash on the A72 at Innerleithen yesterday afternoon (Sunday, March 1), after which one woman is said to be in a “serious condition”.

Four people in all were taken to hospital, and the woman was airlifted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Firefighters had to help several of the injured parties out of their vehicles.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Operations Control mobilised three appliances and a heavy rescue appliance to the scene and firefighters assisted a number of casualties from their vehicles.

“Casualties were handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews ensured the area was made safe before leaving the scene.”

The road was closed for several hours so that an investigation at the site could be carried out and the site cleared.

Police have asked for anyone who saw the incident to call them on 101.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 12.30pm to a report of a four vehicle crash on the A72 at Innerleithen on Sunday, March 1.

“Four people were taken to hospital and one woman remains in hospital in a serious condition.

“Enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of what happened.”
