The numbers taking part were up on last year, with 68 horses from Galashiels, who all met up with around 130 from Lauder, after following the popular new route first tested last year, which takes in less road riding.

Lauder Cornet Greg Scott and his lass Jennifer Cook exchanged greetings at the Threepwood Crossroads with Braw Lad Mark Hood and Braw Lass Alex Mundell.

David Romanis, president of the Braw Lads’ Gathering, gave his speech before the band struck up for the singing of Jeannie’s Black E’e and Braw Braw Lads.

The vote of thanks was made by Stewart Dick, chairman of Lauder Ex Cornets Association, before the joint procession rode into Lauder for a night of celebrations.

And for Braw Lad Mark it was an extra special event, as Lauder Cornet Greg is a good friend of his family.

Mark said: “It was a really good rideout.

“It felt totally different to any other that I have been on, being at the front of the parade, alongside my good friend Greg.

“There were chivers up my spine as the band struck up when we were coming into Lauder.

“It was quite an emotional moment.”
