Minibus crashes through fence and comes to rest on railway tracks near Galashiels station

The minibus, which bore the livery of Jedburgh business Peter Hogg, was carrying no passengers at the time.

It appears to have left the road at the roundabout near the old Abbotsford Hotel, gone through the fence and stopped at the tracks.

The section of the line was closed immediately and bus services were arranged between Tweedbank and Gorebridge.

Traffic on the A7 road was rerouted through the town.

A police spokesperson said last night: “Officers are in attendance at Galashiels Railway station following a one-vehicle road traffic collision.

“The collision occurred around 8.30pm and involved a bus which came to rest on the railway line.

“One person was checked over at the scene by Scottish Ambulance service, but did not require to go to hospital.

“The bus was not carrying any passengers at the time.”

“Officers remain in attendance and enquiries are ongoing.”

This morning, a temporary fence has been installed at the crash site.

The train service is now back up and running, although several trains were cancelled this morning.

Quite how the minibus was able to reach the tracks is, as yet, unknown.

A spokesperson for Network Rail told us: “We do have additional protection around roads where they cross our infrastructure or present a particular risk.

“That is the case at this location as the road climbs the hill at the roundabout.

“The vehicle was removed overnight and the line was fit to reopen this morning.

“Some services have been cancelled as the incident prevented us moving trains to the correct stations ahead of start of service this morning.”
