Melrose pupils on top at Borders Euroquiz

Euroquiz for primary 6 pupils taking place at council headquarters

The event took place on Wednesday, March 2 at Scottish Borders Council (SBC) headquarters in Newtown St Boswells.

Fifteen primary schools from across the region competed in the area final of the Scotland-wide event, which is organised by the Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET). Subjects covered in the quiz included history, geography, sport, culture, languages and the EU.

Melrose defeated Glendinning Terrace Primary School in the final. As the winning team they will go on to compete against other local authority teams in the national final at the Scottish Parliament in June.

Other primary schools involved on Wednesday included Balmoral, Channelkirk, Clovenfords, Fountainhall, Heriot, Kingsland,Newtown, St Boswells, St Margaret’s RC, St Peter’s, St Ronan’s, Stow and Westruther.

Councillor Sandy Aitchison, SBC’s executive member for Education said: “This annual event is a wonderful opportunity from children from all over the Borders to come together to learn in a fun environment. I am always so impressed at how knowledgeable the pupils are and this year was no exception.

“Many congratulations to Melrose Primary on yet another well-deserved win. They are once again the team to beat and I wish them the best of luck for the national final.”

This year’s event featured a short performance competition which saw eight teams performing a short poem, song or story in either French, German or Spanish.

Fountainhall and Heriot were the overall winners for their rousing rendition of ‘La Bamba’ while runners up St Boswells impressed judges with an adaptation of ‘Lucie Chat à la ferme’, a story about a cat called Lucy who visited her grandmother’s farm and saved her fellow animals from a raging bull.

Scottish Borders Council’s children’s champion, Councillor Iain Gillespie, added: “These were two closely fought competitions by teams of well-prepared and talented young people.

“I thank and commend each and every one of them for the contribution they made to a highly exciting event in the Council Chamber.
