Medical charity hosts open-door event

The Order of St John, often known as the best kept secret in Scotland, is opening its doors in the Borders to help people to get to know the charity and, if they choose, to help in its work.

The chairman of the South East Scotland branch of St John, Alasdair Hutton, said: “Although the Order has been doing medical work for centuries, many people in Scotland are completely unaware of it and what it does.”

“Its work is not secret or mysterious, but to help people to see more of what St John does, we will be holding an open evening on Thursday, November 27, in the hall at St Mary’s School in Melrose starting at 7pm.”

St John is a medical charity which raises money for other charities associated with health and the quality of life – Borders Talking Newspaper, Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team, Berwickshire Wheels and the Margaret Kerr Hospice at the BGH.

Some of the charity’s volunteers will be on hand to explain what it does and some of the people it has helped will be there to outline how it has helped them.

The evening runs from 7-9pm, with refreshments.
