Man dies after building fire in Borders village


The victim, who has not yet been named, was found by firefighters as they tackled a blaze at premises known as the Old Village Hall in Nenthorn.
Two fire crews were initially called to the scene at 8.36am on Sunday, before further assistance was sought.

Hide AdA total of 30 firefighters eventually attended the “well-developed” blaze.
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said: “Firefighters with breathing apparatus made entry to the building and fought a well-developed fire using main hose jets.
“As crews fought the fire, a body was then found in the building.
“A joint investigation between SFRS and Police Scotland is now ongoing into the cause of the fire.”

Hide AdIt is understood the building had been undergoing renovations.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman added: “The body of a 61-year-old man was found within the building and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
“Several adjacent properties were evacuated as a precaution and road closures were temporarily put in place.
”Enquiries are currently ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.”
