Mr Henderson, who served in the Royal Air Force, along with fellow Normandy Landing veterans Colin Rae and Michael Garvey, were bestowed with Legion d’honneur medals by Madame Annie Burnside, honorary French consul for the South West.

The three veterans were led through the town under the banner of the Royal British Legion and played into the abbey by a pipes and drums group from Clayesmore School.

Mr Henderson, a grandfather of 11, now lives in Dorset but hails originally from Selkirk, where he grew up and played both cricket and rugby for local teams in the town.

During the invasion of Normandy, Mr Henderson and his RAF colleagues were attached to US forces who landed at Omaha Beach, scene of some of the heaviest fighting on D-Day in June, 1944. (Photograph by Terry Fisher).
