Key for club is sharing knowledge and support

The club is the brainchild of Selkirk entrepreneur Caroline Penman, owner of Liberty Star Trading.

The club was launched at the end of last month, when 22 businesswomen from across the Borders and from a range of sectors attended a meeting in Selkirk Deli.

The next meeting will take place as part of Scottish Borders Business Week on Monday evening.

Mrs Penman said: “Since I started my own business, more and more people have been asking me for advice.

“There was no kind of support network there, so I thought I would set up a Facebook page and see what happened, and I got a really good reaction.”

She added: “The first meeting was about fact-finding – seeing what people wanted from the club.”

Mrs Penman said that the club, which will hold its meetings around the Borders, will enable businesswomen to share ideas, knowledge and network with others, something particularly important for those who work alone.

“At the first meeting we had people there from Kelso, Galashiels and Melrose, and from all industries, from health to finance to events, and I’m hoping we can now build on that,” Mrs Penman said.

At the next meeting the guest will be motivational speaker Mary Turner Thomson, and there will also be speakers from the Association of Scottish Businesswomen.

During the evening, Lyn Galloway from Business Gateway Scottish Borders will highlight the support and advice available locally.

The event is being held at Ettrick Riverside in Selkirk on September 29, from 6-9pm and is free, but booking is essential.
