Jedburgh's Doctor Ruth celebrating success at national awards ceremony

Ruth Dorward, a GP at Jedburgh Medical Practice, won the doctor’s award for the consistent high quality of care she provides and the enthusiasm she shows for her profession.

Although Dr Dorward plans to retire in a few years’ time following a career already spanning 27 years, she maintains a passion for her role and an interest in learning and development.

She said: “This is a win for the whole primary care team, of which I am only a small part. Their support enables me to be the best I can be.”

Also praised at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange ceremony, despite going home empty-handed, were finalists Clare Gillespie, a music therapist with Scottish Borders Council and NHS Borders’ learning disability service, and Isobel Burton, a public dental officer at Hawick Dental Centre.

NHS Borders chairman John Raine said: “The Scottish Health Awards recognise the provision of outstanding patient care, and I am delighted that the Borders was represented among the winners and finalists.

“My congratulations go to Ruth for winning the doctor award, and our other worthy finalists.

“To be recognised in such a well-contested awards scheme is a real achievement, and reflects the hard work and dedication that Ruth, Clare and Isobel put into their roles every day, to provide excellent patient care.”
