Ian and Tib overcome the elements and opposition at Teviotdale

Cold, wet, windy conditions and some testing Aberfield cross ewes made a challenging sheepdog trial for competitors at Whitchesters farm, south of Hawick, on Sunday.

The annual event, organised by Upper Teviotdale Pastoral Society, attracted a smaller entry this year when judge Kath Lyons had 35 dogs to choose from. Held in a different field to previous years, the catering corner not only proved popular for the hospitality on offer, but also for shelter from the elements. The day resulted in £190 being donated to the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

Only one point separated the top two dogs – Ian Brownlie from East Lothian winning with Tib, ahead of Hazel Brown, Coulter, and Kedi. Last year’s winner, Davy Wallace from Blyth Bank, came in third with Tess, while Bobby Henderson, Heriot, earned fourth spot with Tweed and eighth with Bonny. Eskdalemuir’s Duncan Robertson took fifth and seventh with Joe and Moss respectively, separated by Lockerbie’s Alan Common and Mac.

The society hopes the weather improves before the annual show at Teviothead on Saturday, September 15, and cattle judging which takes place on farm this coming Sunday.
