Hawick Man dies in A7 collision

The incident happened at 9.25am December 10 and resulted in the mans red Vauxhall Cavalier leaving the road and catching fire.

Tragically the 64-year-old man from Hawick was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the lorry was taken to hospital but discharged after treatment.

Jane Cracknell lives with her partner, Cameron, beside the scene of the accident, roughly half a mile before Teviothead, and heard the crash of the vehicles.

Jane, 49, said: “I was upstairs in the house when I heard a big bang so I turned and looked.

“I couldn’t see the car at all only the wagon which had stopped. Then I saw smoke and flames coming from where the car had landed.

“It all happened so fast we didn’t really know what was going on especially because the car was out of sight.

“It was really scary, it could have happened to anyone. It seemed like a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

“It’s just such a horrible time for something like this to happen to anyone.”

The road was closed off for hours but is now open and clear.

Inspector Bryan Burns, of Melrose Police Station, said: “First and foremost, our sincere condolences go to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life.

“An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed this collision, or the movements of either vehicle in the moments leading up to it.”
