First Tweed salmon taken

The first Spring salmon of the season on the River Tweed was caught on Thursday, February 4.

The hen fish was caught early in the morning on a gold bodied Willie Gunn. The fish, once it had been weighted and verified, was safely released back into the river. As is traditional, the presentation of the Tweedside Tackle Trophy (crafted by local artist Jason Sweeney back in 2007) was presented to Bob Miller by Tim Pilcher. Bob is now the 10th angler to win this prestigious prize. In addition to the trophy, Bob received a certificate and a Tweedside Tackle ‘goodie bag’. The trophy remains on show in the Tweedside Tackle shop in Kelso.

The trophy for the first salmon of the season caught from the Kelso Angling Association (KAA) water on the Teviot was awarded to local angler Dave Simpson. Caught from the Castle Pool with a yellow flying C, it was a 14lber and was landed by ex-Lower Floors head boatman Jim Smail.
