First Borderers of the decade born on new year’s day

First to come along, weighing 7lb 14oz, was Cody Lee Birse, at 31 minutes past midnight ... believed to be the third baby born in Scotland in 2020.

He’s the first child for parents Siobhan Johnston, aged 23, and Chris Birse, 29, of Chirnside.

Siobhan said: “He was two days overdue, and I was four hours in labour, so he must have wanted to wait until 2020.

“He is absolutely amazing.”

Then, at 1.55pm, Rachel Cowans and Martin Steel, from Hawick, welcomed their new baby boy into the world.

The couple have decided to call him Glen.

The wee lad, who was born weighing 10lb 13oz, was six days overdue and is wee brother to four-year-old Freya.

Like Cody, Glen appeared to be holding on for the twenties, as he was born six days overdue.

Midwife Rachael Gilchrist told us: “We thought for a while we were about to have the first Scottish baby of the decade, but we heard someone in Edinburgh came first, then there was another one in Aberdeen.

“If we did get the first it would be quite exciting because we are a fairly small unit.”

The first Scottish baby of 2020 was a boy born at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary at 12.03am – when the fireworks at Edinburgh Castle were still lighting the capital sky.
