Resident Martin Millar, who took the photos, said: “I just looked over and saw a car in flames, with a guy holding a mobile phone walking around it.

"I thought it was going to explode, and there were a few bangs, but the fire crew came 10 minutes after I called and put it out quickly.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received calls that a car was on fire off the A68 in Earlston, opposite the rugby club, at 9.44am this morning.

"We only sent one appliance, and the fire was extinguished using two BA (breathing apparatus) and two hosereel jets.

"Our crew is still in attendance."
