Eyemouth walk in memory of club presidents raises almost £460

Some 15 ramblers turned out on Saturday for a seaside walk of more than seven miles starting and finishing in Eyemouth.

It was organised in memory of past club presidents Eddie Kellie and John Dickson, and it is estimated to have raised almost £460 for charities to be chosen by the club.

A party was held at the Eyemouth Hippodrome after the walk to celebrate the fundraising success of those taking part.

Eddie was a branch manager for the Royal Bank of Scotland in Ayton, and John was a farmer at Coldingham.

“They were both well liked and respected members of the community, both past presidents of Eyemouth Rotary Club and both very active in charity work and helping people in the local community,” said the 17-strong club’s president elect, Dave Holland.

“They were both keen walkers, so the route we chose is a shortened version of Eddie’s trail described in route 12 of the ScotBorders walks around Eyemouth.

“This is a scenic route from Eyemouth of about seven and a half miles.

“It follows the Eyewater west then north to Alemill and Whitecross, turning east to Fleurs Farm and down to Linkim Shore, then back to Eyemouth on the coastal path.”

This was the second time the club has staged such a walk since the deaths of John in 2007, leaving a wife and two daughters, and Eddie in 2010, leaving a wife and son, and hopes are now high that it could become an annual event.

John was made club president earlier in 2007, and Eddie was president from 2002 to 2003.

Dave added: “Eyemouth Rotary Club would like to thank all those that contributed to a successful walking event.

“This is the second time we have held this walk, and we would like to make it an annual event.”
