ELECTION LIVE – BRS Constituency – 12.44am – SNP showing well in early counting

Just over two hours into the counting and with 142 ballot boxes arrived now at the count in Springwood Park in Kelso, early indications are that the SNP could be surging ahead in the bigger towns like Galashiels, Hawick and Selkirk.

That would be borne out by the body language of the various main party activists eagerly scanning the counting stations.

The SNP look confident, the Conservatives serious, with the Lib Dems pretty quiet.

However, SNP candidate Calum Kerr, who chaired the Yes Scottish Borders campaign in the run-up to the Independence referendum, maintains it is too early and too close to call the result with an estimated four hours at least still to go.

“It’s really difficult to call this one. Back in 2010 our vote was 4,000, but we’re way beyond that this time,” he told us.

Timeline 11.09pm: For the candidates in the Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk constituency, the posturing is over and the waiting begins.

The first ballot boxes (90 of them) have arrived at Springwood Hall in Kelso and counting has started.
