Dog dies after 120ft cliff fall

A dog whose owners were walking near St Abbs died after falling around 120 feet from the cliffs near the village.

Eyemouth’s inshore and all-weather lifeboats were both called out by Aberdeen Coastguard at 1.20pm on Wednesday, May 11 after it was reported that a dog had gone over the side of a cliff and that there were also concerns for its owners.

The dog and its owners were walking on the cliffs to the north of St Abbs, when the dog went over the cliff and fell.

Both the inshore and all-weather lifeboats quickly arrived on the scene.

Working with the Coastguard teams, the coastline was searched until the owners of the dog where found safe and well.

They then directed the lifeboat crew to the location of their dog. Sadly, the dog did not survive its fall.

Then, just over two hours later, Aberdeen Coastguard requested that Eyemouth lifeboat be launched to assist a yacht which was experiencing engine difficulties, in the sea three miles to the east of Eyemouth.

The lifeboat was again quickly on scene and stood by the yacht, which was able to make way under its own power despite having a contaminated fuel supply.

The lifeboat escorted the yacht back to the safety of Eyemouth harbour, arriving just under an hour later.

Once the yacht was safely alongside, the lifeboat was stood down and was made ready for service.
