A cat is believed to have been shot in Peebles, and police are appealing for help to identify the culprit.

Neve, a two-year-old female cat, was found injured near Crookston Burn, south of the town, at around 5.20am last Thursday, July 2, having previously been seen unhurt at 10pm the day before.

She was taken to a vet’s for treatment and metal fragments were found in a wound, leading police to believe she’d been hit by someone using a shotgun.

Constable Barry Taylor, of Peebles police station, said: “This incident has not only caused significant injuries to a family pet but also a great deal of distress and upset to her owner.

“Neve is fortunately well enough to be allowed to return home, but she may face longer-term issues due to the nature of her injuries.

“Inquiries are ongoing in an effort to confirm how the cat sustained the injuries, and I would encourage anyone with any information to get in touch with us on 101, quoting incident number 1,101 of July 3, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
