Update: Police treating overnight Hawick flat fire as suspicious

An investigation has been launched into a fire in Hawick’s Dovemount Place last night.

The blaze, above Gino’s Fish Bar takeaway in Dovemount Place, broke out around 1.45am and fire crews were there for around two hours.

One woman had to be rescued from the flat and police say they are treating the fire as suspicious.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Around 1.30am on Monday, March 30, the Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the report of a fire at a flat in Dovemount Place in Hawick.

“The fire was extinguished and there are no reports of any injuries.

“Officers attended and at this stage the fire is being treated as suspicious and enquiries are at an early stage.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman added: “We received a call at 1.49am. We had four pumps in attendance and police and ambulance were also in attendance.

“One adult female from the first floor was led to safety.

“Crews were dampening down hot spots throughout the night.

“We left the scene again at 4.10am.”

Gino’s Fish Bar is currently closed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
