Nathan Brown, 23, had denied hitting the two-month child in the face and repeatedly shaking her at a house in Jedburgh in July 2018 but was convicted by a majority verdict.

His lawyer claimed that Brown had dropped the youngster, said to have needed emergency brain surgery afterwards, by accident.

Sentencing of Brown, formerly of Eildon Road in Hawick, was due to take place at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today, February 21, but has been deferred until Friday, March 13, for reports.

He was jailed for 18 months last year for severely assaulting his partner at the time and endangering her life in December 2018, also in Jedburgh.
