Sentence deferred for benefit cheat

A 31-year-old woman has admitted benefit fraud offences involving more than £9,000.

Lindsay Gemmell received £2,338.90 in Employment Support Allowance when her partner shared the household in Marmion Road, Galashiels, between February 14, 2014, and October 2 that same year.

As a single parent she also claimed Income Support of £6,865.10 between October 2014 and September 2016, to which she was not entitled.

Gemmell, now living in Newtongrange, had a not-guilty plea to a third charge of receiving £292.40 in benefits she was not entitled to over a month in 2016 accepted by the Crown at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Roderick Flinn deferred sentence until November 16 for the production of a Criminal Justice Social Work Report and a Restriction of Liberty Order assessment.
