Road ban for drink-driver

A joiner has been banned from the road for 16 months after admitting driving while almost four times the legal limit on the morning of New Year’s Day.

Adam Nairn, 30, collided with a roundabout verge on the A6091 Galashiels-Newtown road near Tweedbank at around 6.30am and his car ended up in a field.

He had left the scene by the time police arrived, but when officers caught up with him, he gave a breath-alcohol reading of 85 microgrammes, the legal limit being 22.

Nairn’s lawyer told Selkirk Sheriff Court his client could not provide an explanation for why he had decided to drive his car after having been out earlier celebrating the arrival of 2020.

Sheriff Raymond McMenamin said it was a matter of concern that Nairn must have known he would be over the legal alcohol limit and that he had left the scene of an accident without reporting it.

Nairn, of Kilnknowe Place in Galashiels was fined £600 as well as being banned from driving.
