Pair admit careless driving

Two teenage motorists have admitted careless driving on the Melrose bypass by driving at excessive speed and being too close to vehicles in front.

Procurator fiscal Graham Fraser told Selkirk Sheriff Court that police officers in pursuit reckoned they reached a speed of up to 95mph and they appeared to be travelling in tandem.

Nineteen-year-olds Emma Young of Magdala Terrace, Galashiels, and Declyn Cleghorn of Bongate, Jedburgh, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without due care and attention on the A6091 road from the Ravenswood roundabout on the evening of October 9.

Mr Fraser said the cars were eventually pulled over at the Borders Crematorium junction.

Young’s lawyer said that his client – who runs a gift shop – felt under pressure from the car behind and increased her speed.

Cleghorn’s defence agent said that it was his client’s position that while he knew the other driver he did not know it was her who was behind the wheel.

He added that he was keeping pace with the car in front.

Both drivers were fined £200 and had five penalty points placed on their licence.

As Cleghorn already had three penalty points on his licence he will require to sit his test again before being able to drive.
