Canvassers operating in Galashiels on behalf of an insulation company were genuine and not bogus callers, a police spokesperson has confirmed.

Scottish Borders Police yesterday posted a statement on its Facebook page stating concerns that an elderly Galashiels woman had been approached by representatives of the West Lothian firm Everwarm.

It was believed that the canvassers were bogus and the police issued a statement warning members of the public to be aware of such activity in the area.

Now it has emerged that the canvassers were representatives of the company but that some were not wearing appropriate company identification.

A police spokesperson said: “We posted yesterday regarding apparently bogus doorstep callers operating in the Galashiels area.

“We have since made contact with the parent company Everwarm and ascertained that they did indeed have canvassers going door-to-door offering to survey properties for insulation measures and heating system upgrades.

“Unfortunately some canvassers were not following company guidelines of wearing company branded PPE and showing company ID lanyards and hence gave the impression of being bogus.

“The company have now been suitably advised regarding the effects this unprofessional image can have on communities and they have undertaken to ensure that all staff follow the guidelines.

“The company, Everwarm-Envirohomes will be continuing to canvass and survey properties in Galashiels, Hawick, Jedburgh and Selkirk and should be wearing appropriate PPE and carrying ID.

“Thanks to all those members of the public who contacted us regarding this issue.
