Silver Sunday is an annual celebration held throughout the UK for older adults. Led by the Sir Simon Milton Foundation, it celebrates the value and knowledge older adults contribute to their local communities as well as helping to address loneliness and isolation amongst the older population.

This year’s local event is being organised by the Community Capacity Building Team at Scottish Borders Council (SBC) and will include a dance session by local tutor, Chalky Whyte, a gentle exercise class led by FitBorders and a line dancing session. Participants will also be able to visits stalls from the Council’s Safer Communities team, Age Scotland, Walk-it and others.

Councillor Frances Renton, SBC’s Executive Member for Social Work and Housing said: “This is a chance for older adults across the Borders to come together for the afternoon to try something new and have some fun. The contribution that older adults make to our local communities is significant and this is an opportunity for them to be acknowledged in an enjoyable way. I would encourage people from throughout the region to come along and enjoy the festivities.”

Silver Sunday is a free event with no need to book. Tea, coffee and cake will be provided along with a tombola. There will be a collection on the day for the Margaret Kerr Unit at the Borders General Hospital.
