Calls to speed up Jim Clark Rally investigation

Organisers have announced that the event, due to take place on private tracks next month, has been cancelled due to insufficient entries.

Last year, after an inquiry into motorsport safety, the Lord Advocate’s office announced they would make further investigations into the deaths of three people at the rally in 2014. These investigations remain ongoing, meaning the event had to take place on private roads this year.

Mr Lamont, who has repeatedly raised this issue in Parliament, has said the news is disappointing and that while a full investigation needs to take place has written to the Lord Advocate’s office to urge a conclusion to proceedings.

He said: “The cancellation of the Jim Clark Rally is very disappointing. The tragic deaths at the event in 2014 had a huge impact on the Berwickshire community and I fully support the efforts to prevent another accident like this occurring in the future.

“However, this event has been great for the economy in the Borders. Businesses will undoubtedly lose out as a result if the rally doesn’t get back up and running next year.

“I have written to the Lord Advocate’s office to ask them for an urgent update surrounding their investigations. I hope that the organisers will get the go ahead sooner rather than later for a closed road rally to be held safely next year.”
