82-year-old driver dies after car and van crash

The first accident occurred on the outskirts of Selkirk on the A707 Selkirk to Caddonfoot road near Linglie Farm at around 11.20am on Friday, June 24,

A collision between a blue and white Suzuki motorcycle and a black Fiat car resulted in the 43-year-old male rider of the motorcycle being taken to the Borders General Hospital and later transferred to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

The two female occupants of the Fiat motorcar suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Borders General Hospital but later discharged.

Later that day, a beige Nissan Micra was involved in a collision with a Blue Mercedes van on the A708 Selkirk to Yarrowford road, near Philiphaugh at around 12.45pm..

The occupants of the van were uninjured, but the 82-year-old female driver of the Nissan was taken to the Borders General Hospital, where she later died.

Sergeant Neil Inglis of the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Galashiels said: “Tragically a woman has died following the collision near Philiphaugh.

“These were two serious but unrelated incidents which occurred within a short space of time and less than two miles apart.

“I would ask any members of the public who may have witnessed these collisions or these vehicles prior to the collisions to come forward if they have not already done so.”

Police are also appealing for witnesses after a third road traffic collision, between two vehicles on the A7 on Saturday, June 25.

The collision happened at around 11.45am, at the junction to Appletreehall, north of Hawick, when a blue Land Rover Defender was turning right and a silver Fiat Seicento was heading south towards Hawick. The Fiat collided with the Land Rover.

Both drivers were taken by ambulance to the Borders General Hospital. The 86-year-old driver of the Land Rover suffered minor injuries and the 34-year-old driver of the Fiat suffered life-changing injuries.

Officers are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who saw the vehicles in the time leading up to the collision to get in touch.

Sergeant Andy Gibb of Road Policing said: “Our inquiries into this collision are at an early stage and we would welcome information from any members of the public who witnessed this collision or who saw either the silver Fiat Seicento or the Land Rover Defender before the collision happened at 11.45 am.”
