71-year-old reckons he’s lucky to be alive after Selkirk road accident

Davie, a member of skiffle band the Bogie’s Close Stompers and organiser of the annual Selkirk Sessions folk festival, is now back home recovering after being hit by a silver-coloured Seat Alhambra car as he was crossing a road at around 4.30pm last Thursday, December 5.

Davie told us: “I was heading across from the pant well, and I saw a car coming up Kirk Wynd, indicating to turn right up to the car park.

“It turned up, and I began to cross. I didn’t see the other car behind it, though, which was heading straight up the road.

“The bumper hit my knee, which broke my leg.

“I also broke my ribs on the car’s bonnet.

“As I was lying on the ground, I decided to try to roll onto my side to see if I was alive or not, and the pain told me I was.

“The driver was out of the car and phoning for an ambulance. I told him I didn’t mind him running me over as long as he didn’t stand on my glasses. They were lying in the gutter beside me.”

Davie, also left with cuts and bruises, faces Christmas in a special splint fitted at the Borders General Hospital in Melrose after he was rushed there in an ambulance.

He told us: “I need to go back after the festive season to get it put onto another setting.”

The 57-year-old driver of the car was uninjured.

Police have issued a plea for any witnesses to the collision to get in touch.

Claire White, a constable at Selkirk police station, said: “I am appealing to anyone who witnessed this crash to come forward and call us at Selkirk on the 101 number, quoting the reference 2,482 of December 5.

“The crash happened in Kirk Wynd, near to West Port.”
