TV presenter Kate Garraway has revealed that her husband may never fully recover from coronavirus effects
Kate Garraway returned to Good Morning Britain on Friday 5 June, making her first appearance since her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with coronavirus.
During the TV presenter’s emotional return to the show she revealed that Derek may never recover, even now that he is free of the virus.
Although he is now free of the virus, Mr Draper remains in a coma in the intensive care unit, where he has been for 10 weeks.
‘Extraordinary damage on his body’
Garraway got emotional as she revealed the extent of the damage the virus has had on her husband.
"The fight with the virus has been won and he's still here but it's wreaked extraordinary damage on his body and we don't know if he can recover from that," she said.
Speaking to Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh the presenter said the moment her husband entered the hospital "feels like a second ago, and also about 10 years ago" as she hasn't seen Mr Draper since March.
Speaking on a video call from her back garden in North London, Garraway added, "He's still with us and has fought the most extraordinary battle. The fact that he is still here, I am so grateful.
"He is very, very sick and as time goes on, it's a virus and as doctors manage one but extraordinarily well and there seems to be a flicker of hope."
She revealed the virus "has affected him from the top of his head to the bottom of his toes.”
Continued Clap for Carers
Thursday 4 June was the first week without the usual Clap for Carers event occurring throughout streets in the UK, after it ended its 10 week run on 29 June.
However, Garraway and her children, Darcey and William, decided to continue to Clap for Carers on Thursday 4 June, to thank the NHS staff taking care of her husband. The presenter shared a video of the occasion on her Instagram, showing her family applauding in the kitchen.
Accompanying the video were the words: "No official #clapforcarers tonight but we just wanted have our own mini one as our heart felt thanks go on to all fighting to keep Derek with us."
Fans of the show have sent messages of support to the star on Twitter.
Meanwhile co-stars Ben Shepherd, Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid have also all sent Garraway their best wishes.
