The then 17-year-old deputy head girl at Selkirk High School was heading off to do volunteer teaching in Sri Lanka during a gap year. However, the aspiring teacher had to first raise £4,350 in six months, so she organised a series of events including a charity auction, bag-packing days at a supermarket, a barn dance and pony activity days for youngsters at Broomhill stables, near Selkirk, where her horse Hector was stabled.
