NOSTALGIA 1995: School’s out for Sprouston headteacher

The glee in youngsters’ eyes when they realise for the first time they can read had provided headteacher Mairi Campbell with some of the happiest moments in her teaching career.

That’s what she told the Southern back in 1995 upon retiring after 18 years in charge at Sprouston Primary School and many more before that as a teacher at Newtown and assistant head atJedburgh’s Parkside Primary.

“It is wonderful to be there when it happens,” she said. “ I’ll miss the children, staff and the community who have been so kind to me over the years, but my home is St Boswells and I’ve no intention of moving.”

Our photo shows Sprouston Primary pupils presenting Mrs Campbell with farewell gifts.
