Complementary therapist Corrinne Johnston has picked up the Scottish Borders Violence Against Women Partnership’s 2019 award in recognition of the time she dedicates to the Wilderhaugh-based charity.

The 57-year-old has been volunteering at the centre for almost five years, offering free 30-minute complementary therapy and meditation classes to rape victims either receiving support or on a waiting list for help.

Corrinne said: “I was overwhelmed but grateful to receive the award.

“I go over to Galashiels twice a month and offer survivors alternative therapies and meditation.

“I’m still a bit dazzled and dazed by the recognition.

“I’m not one for publicity and an award like this has never happened to me before, but it’s lovely. For me, it’s all about the people, though.”

The mum of three has been providing free therapy sessions to sex crime victims since 2015 in the hope of making them feel less anxious and better able to manage their distress.

Partnership chairwoman Louise MacLennan said: “I would like to extend my huge thanks to all those services and individuals across the Borders continually working hard to tackle violence and abuse.

“Corrinne has amply demonstrated her commitment to this agenda and is a very worthy winner.

“My personal thanks and gratitude go out to her for her dedication and hard work.”

The accolade, being presented for the third year, was awarded to Corrinne at Scottish Borders Council’s Newtown headquarters last week.

Hawick and Hermitage councillor George Turnbull, the council’s executive member for community safety, added: “I would like to add my thanks and appreciation to Corrinne for all the support she has provided to women from across the Borders at such a vulnerable time in their lives.

“We are extremely grateful for the contribution she continues to make.”
