Galashiels and district councillor Euan Jardine set up the line for those vulnerable members of the community who do not use the social media site.

The number to call is 0800 009 6544.

Euan said: “What I would envisage is that most people will call to ask for food supplies or to get a prescription picked up if they can’t leave the house.

“Our volunteers will knock on the door, leave the goods on the doorstep, then step back.

“It’s very important that we keep everyone as safe as possible.

“Although we have quite rightly been told to stay in our homes, you can still go out as long as it is to help others.”

Euan said since he created the phone line, he has been “inundated” with people who are offering to help out.

He said: “It shows what kind of a community we have here in Galashiels … it’s been great.”

“Now we need some experienced volunteers who would be willing to help answer the calls.

“The call answering can either be done on a rota system or just send me a private message and I can add or take your number away at anytime.

“The line will be open 9-5 Monday to Sunday, and a message system is available for when it is closed … it goes to my email and I can activate someone.

“It would also be great to have a pool of volunteers that are able to be contacted to help with some of the actions required from the calls.”
