Scott Park.

The benefit of that option is that the new building can be constructed while the existing Academy, including its external sports facilities, remain fully operational.

A report, to be presented to council members on Thursday, says: “The building in this location presents a strong civic presence to the community and town setting and has a good aspect and orientation with respect to daylight.

“The place making agenda is strongest with this option in terms of the linkages with the building and the wider civic buildings in Galashiels, such as the Great Tapestry of Scotland Visitor Centre.”

Further options considered, but not recommended for approval, included a new campus on the existing Academy playing fields and to build on the footprint of the existing school.

The recommendation to push ahead with building on Scott Park is sure to face some opposition.

At a recent meeting of Galashiels Community Council a number of members expressed dissatisfaction at a delay until early next year for the launch of a public consultation over the plans.

Concern was also expressed that the council had made 18 bore holes on the proposed school site - without consulting the town’s elected members first.
