A larger number of hoggs available, with greater returns achieved.

At their weekly primestock sale on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 94 clean cattle, 50 OTM cattle, 126 new season lambs, 937 old season hoggs (647 SQQ) and 653 ewes.

Bullocks (27) averaged 206.4p per kg and sold to 226p (-2.3p on week), heifers (61) averaged 205.5p per kg and sold to 242p (-3.3p on week) and 50 beef type OTM cattle averaged 124.8p per kg and sold to 153p (+5.4p on the week).

New season lambs averaged 264.5p per kg (+14p on the week) and sold to £122, old season SQQ hoggs averaged 225p per kg (+6.2p on week) and sold to £122 and ewes averaged £74.57, and sold to £112.50. Heavy ewes £89.98, light ewes £67.64.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 25 prime cattle, 34 over 30 month cattle, 130 spring lambs, 3,747 prime hoggs and 3,342 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Some good quality prime cattle forward and more handyweights required. Best sorts sold a shade easier but plainer cattle similar. Top price to 233.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by Messrs A. and W.J. Taylor and Son, Dashwell Green.

In the OTM section more cows on offer and sold on par with national trend to a top price of 130.5p, 129.5p for Charolais cows from Mr J. Watret, Burnside.

The 130 spring lambs sold to a top of 300p per kilo for Texels from R. Johnstone, Kimmeter Green and to £118 per head for Texels from R.G. Dodd, Greenbrae. Overall average of 261.6p per kilo (SQQ 264.2p).

More lambs required to meet buyers requirements. Producers are urged to keep drawing lambs at lighter weights.

A much larger show of 5,370 prime hoggs again sold to extreme rates. All hoggs carrying good flesh sold to extreme rates, especially export type hoggs with heavyweight hoggs being short of buyers requirements.
