At their fortnightly store sale last Tuesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 22 cattle.

A small show of cattle for the last of the season sale, with a throughput of numbers substantially up on the year by 296 head, vendors are finally seeing that trade is dearer than local centres and with the advantage of payment on the day as an extra bonus.

At their weekly sale of primestock last Wednesday John Swan Limited had forward and sold 43 new season lambs, 157 hoggs and young sheep and 77 ewes.

First spring lambs of the season on offer, a week earlier than last year met with unprecedented demand, numbers now needed to fulfill demand.

At their weekly primestock sale on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 84 clean cattle, 52 OTM cattle, 217 new season lambs 285 old season hoggs (SQQ) and 232 ewes.

Bullocks (32) averaged 206.7p per kg and sold to 229p (+0.3p on week), heifers (45) averaged 203p per kg and sold to 235p (-2.5p on week), young bulls (7) averaged 171.2p per kg and sold to 183p (-2.1p on the week) and 52 beef type OTM cattle averaged 126.3p per kg to 185p (+1.5p on the week).

The 217 new season lambs averaged 251.3p per kg (-13.2p on the week) and sold to £121, 285 old season SQQ hoggs averaged 191.8p per kg (n/c on week) and sold to £120 and 232 ewes averaged £72.39, and sold to £111. Heavy ewes £88.12, light ewes £58.95.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 16 prime cattle, four young bulls, seven over 30 month cattle, 308 spring lambs, 4,054 prime hoggs and 3,294 cast ewes and rams at their weekly primestock sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A plainer show of prime cattle on offer, although handy weight sorts remain to trade at recent rates with more required. The sale was topped at 225.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by Messrs A. and W.J. Taylor and Son, Dashwellgreen, bullocks to 217.5p from the same home.

A small and plain show of cows on offer with more required. Top of 157p for a Charolais shown by J. Watret, Burnside. The 308 spring lambs sold to a top of 321p per kilo for Texels from J.S. Forrest, Supplebank and to £133 per head for Texels from B. Dawson, Colinton Mains. Overall average of 261.2p per kilo (SQQ 262.6p). More lambs required to meet buyers requirements. Producers are urged to keep drawing lambs at lighter weights.

A mixed show of 4,054 prime hoggs as producers come towards the end of the season sold to the usual ringside of buyers. All good quality hoggs carrying flesh as well as heavyweight hoggs sold extremely well. Top price of £128 per head for Texels from J.A. Gracie and Sons, Byreburnside, with a top per kilo of 281p for Texels from J. Donoghue, Trawill.

Last week Border Livestock Exchange sold 174 prime cattle including 44 cows, 961 prime sheep including 417 new season lambs, 259 old season lambs, 285 cast ewes, 150 store cattle and three breeding bulls.

Aberdeen Angus heifers from South Farm, Newcastle, sold to 365p per kg to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick. Belgian Blue cows from Sharplaw Farms, Hownam, and Bowsden Moor, Berwick, sold to 290p per kg and £1,385 per head.

New season lambs were forward in greater numbers than at the same time last year. Texel Crosses to 540p per kg, Suffolk Crosses to 535p per kg and Meatlinc Crosses to 530p per kg.

Store cattle were still being sold in remarkable numbers for the time of year. The older kinds were slower to sell compared to the younger lighter ones which sold extremely well. Breeding bulls sold to £2,250 for both Limousin and Aberdeen Angus.
