Agricultural shows across Borders called off due to coronavirus

Three of the region’s agricultural shows have become the latest casualties of the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced their cancellation this summer.

Organisers announced the call-off of this year’s Robertson Show, due to be held on Saturday, September 5, this week.

Chairman David Anderson said: “Clearly with the exceptional circumstances we find ourselves living under with no real indication that large events and social distancing restrictions will be lifted soon, we felt that there was little alternative but to cancel.

“Similar shows and events scheduled for the same time as ours have already been cancelled.

“We are truly disappointed in making this decision but have every expectation that next year the show will be a cracker.”

That announcement follows a similar one from Peebles Show organisers who called off their event due for Saturday, August 15.

A spokesman said: “As a responsible event organiser we take our public health responsibilities very seriously and with the government advising against attending mass gatherings and further action relating to social distancing and self-isolation, the society felt there was no other option in the interest of protecting all our competitors, exhibitors, members, visitors and volunteers during this period of national public health uncertainty.

The 106th Newtown St Boswells show organised for Saturday, July 18 has also been cancelled.
