The best product in the world, displayed on a beautiful-looking website, may never even be seen by potential customers if the words are not Search Engine Optimised.

But keeping on top of your digital presence can be time-consuming, confusing and costly – especially if it takes you away from your core business.

“Why would a business owner turning over £20million a year want to sit behind a computer adding keywords to their website?” says Brian Lonsdale, who set up Smarter Digital Marketing in 2014.

And he should know what he’s talking about. After studying marketing at University for four years, and working in the industry honing his skills, he started his own company, determined to take the mystique out of marketing.

“Nobody wants to be confused or to get an explanation that goes over their heads,” he says. “We keep things simple so the client knows what they are getting. We provide reports at least monthly and we ensure the customer understands what’s going on.”

And it’s a strategy that’s worked well, taking Smarter Digital Marketing from its first client – an Indian restaurant in his native Glasgow – to billion dollar Randox Health, which won the Government contract to supply fit to fly tests and antibody tests during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Driving awareness and business

Every client will have different digital marketing needs and will need different solutions. Social media marketing like Facebook ads help build brand awareness, for example, whereas Google is text-based and needs certain keywords – words clients might search for – for people to find your business.

Whether you’re offering a service – from hairdressing to legal advice – or selling a product – from bathroom supplies to world cruises – it’s important that your online presence is right for both your potential clients and for the platform on which it is appearing.

Expertise

There are now six experts employed at Smarter Digital Marketing, including online marketers, content writers, software developers and graphic designers.

They have a wide range of clients in their portfolio from bricklayers to barristers but do have certain areas of specialism including e-commerce, retail, healthcare, property and engineering.

No brief is too large or small – be that spending £20 a week on Facebook marketing or a thousands of pounds on a full campaign, web rebuild and rebrand.

Keeping ahead of technology

“Google is always changing,” Brian explained. “It also looks different for different sectors and will appear differently if you’re searching in the USA or the UK for example.”

And that’s why it makes sense to hire someone with the knowledge, the expertise and the time to ensure your business is seen, that it reaches the right audience, that potential clients can find you and that the process of interacting with your business or purchasing your products is as smooth and user-friendly as it should be.

As Brian explains: “There are so many aspects to running your own company, and you want to make sure that you are spending the time on the important things, speaking to customers or suppliers and growing your business, and not getting bogged down behind a screen maintaining a website or keeping on top of your facebook advertising.”

Speaking your language

Online marketing is also a minefield of jargon and “smoke and mirrors”, says Brian.

Smarter Digital Marketing have a no-nonsense approach to what they do, and explain the processes to clients in a way that can be properly understood – cutting out the jargon and telling them exactly what they’re doing and how their company is performing.

“We don’t want clients to get too bogged down in SEO and what it means – we keep it simple and don’t use jargon and make it easier for people to understand the technicalities.”
