Local MSP to take part in Earth Hour

The event is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and sees people across the world switch off their lights for an hour in support of the people and wildlife threatened by climate change.

SNP MSP Mr Wheelhouse said: “This is a fun initiative that has a serious message behind it. We can all undertake little actions that can have a big impact on the effects of climate change on our communities.

“I will be taking part and look forward to working with WWF to encourage people to think about the kind of energy they use and where it comes from in order to highlight the effects of climate change on people and wildlife.”

Last year record numbers took part in 152 countries and 6,895 towns and cities.

On Saturday the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower and Edinburgh Castle will be in darkness for the hour.

WWF Scotland director, Lang Banks said: “We are glad that so many politicians are keen to be Earth Hour stars. We encourage everyone to be part of the world’s biggest celebration of our brilliant planet, to show their support for planet friendly decisions by our leaders.”

Earth Hour starts at 8.30pm.
