Knit a Rainbow Garden

Come to the community garden at The Backlands, Dunbar, and plant a rainbow of wild flowers.

On April 22, North Light Arts launch ‘Knitting the Rainbow Garden’ a project supported by Grow Wild (the national outreach programme for the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew).

Knitting the Rainbow Garden is one of only four projects to take place in Scotland this year chosen to promote the value of wild flowers, North Light Arts are launching it as part of the many John Muir Birthday celebrations taking place in Dunbar.

The inspiration for the garden comes from the work of our John Muir Artist in Residence last year Kathy Beckett, who captured the imagination of the community many of whom came up with the idea of a rainbow for our Gathering Space.

They will be asking people to help plant a Dyers Garden and will also be growing heritage flowers that the Trinitarian Monks, who inhabited this space in the 13th century, might have grown for medicinal or culinary use, but also to make natural dyes for cotton and wool or to produce the colour of writing ink.

There will be a variety of craft demonstrations on April 22 including the Haddington Spinners, and workshops by other artisans, A full programme of summer workshops for all the family will be available on the day as well.
