Preview: crime at the double

Two prolific crime writers are dropping by to participate in a discussion on crime writing, entitled ‘Finding your Detective’, on February 11.

David Mark’s new novel is Dead Pretty, the fifth to feature big-hearted, honest detective Aector McAvoy. Aector finds it hard to let things go when he knows something’s not right – even when he’s heading down a path he knows he shouldn’t take.

David spent more than 15 years as a journalist, including seven as a crime reporter with the Yorkshire Post. He walked the same streets that now serve as a backdrop to his writing, so it’s a territory that he knows well.

Sophie Hannah is the creator of the Culver Valley crime series. In her latest, The Narrow Bed, a killer nicknamed ‘Billy Dead Mates’ is murdering pairs of best friends, one by one. In each case, Billy gives his victims a small, hand-made white book with a line of 
poetry in it before killing them. Stand-up comedian Kim Trebbeck has one of the little white books. Is he coming for her?

The discussion will be chaired by the Scotsman’s Stuart Kelly.
