This September sees the 21st annual Scottish Borders Walking Festival, which this year will take place in and around Galashiels.

The festival was first held in 1995, with West Linton hosting, and it has taken in several Borders towns over the years – Jedburgh and Denholm taking the reins in 2014.

Tracey Alder, secretary of Galashiels Community Council and corporate support manager of the Walking Festival Committee 2015, told us: “This year will be the 21st walking festival and so Galashiels Community Council want to make it one to remember.

“The organising is well under way and we have a great committee who are working hard in various groups to make this a super event.

“It will kick off with a welcome ceremony on Saturday, September 5, and walks will take place from Sunday, September 6 to Saturday, September 12 inclusive.

“The programme of walks on offer will cover a range of distances and grades from around 14 miles and strenuous, down to two miles and easy.

“We have a full social event calendar just being finalised too and there will be something for everyone after each walking day during the week.

“We’ll have a quiz night at Quins restaurant, a concert at the Focus Centre and a ceilidh at the rugby club, as well as a games night, with indoor bowls, dominoes and chess, so there really will be something for everyone.

“We are looking for extra experienced walk leaders who would be available, on a voluntary basis, to lead walking groups during the week of the festival.”
