SATURDAY night will be a huge milestone for Galashiels Town Band.

Following on from the formation of Gala Youth Band in 2011, the Town Band’s concert in Trinity Church will see the first performance by Gala Junior Band, formed only in April this year.

Stuart Black, band musical director, said: “When the Youth Band started, they were mainly absolute beginners, but now they have progressed enormously.

“Some of them are now also playing with the senior band and their overall standard is such that we can no longer take beginners into the Youth Band.

“The Junior Band provides a means for us to continue training beginners.”

The Junior Band is made up mainly of Primary 4 and 5 children, and all instruments, uniforms and tuition are provided free by the band, which requires continuous fundraising.

Junior Band members have just completed a sponsored walk, above, while the Youth Band attempted a sponsored “No Talking” practice.

Saturday’s concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will be a showcase of youth talent, since it will also feature Borders Youth Band, conducted by Alan Fernie, who are current Scottish champions.
