A NEW production of David Mamet’s controversial play Oleana will be presented at The Wynd Theatre in Melrose later this month.

It is the third production at the bijou venue from Scots theatre company Firebrand, with director Richard Baron at the helm.

Baron will re-join forces with Adrian Rees – set designer of West End shows such as Buddy and Fame – after a successful season together at Pitlochry Festival Theatre.

The director, who has worked with stars as diverse as David Tennant and Penelope Keith, told us: “I have long wanted to direct this emotionally-charged play, one of the most talked-about of the last 20 years, which is a gripping account of the power struggle between a male university lecturer and one of his female students.

“It is a challenging piece of work, ideally suited to the intimacy of The Wynd.”

The role of John, the professor, which has already been played by David Suchet and Geoffrey Rush, will be taken by Simon Desborough, with Janet Coulson, Firebrand’s joint artistic director, portraying the student Carol.

Oleana runs at The Wynd from Wednesday, September 21 to Saturday, September 24 inclusive, at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

Tickets are £13.50 with discounts available for students and under-18s.
