Summertime often brings the vision of natural looking highlights, healthy shiny hair and long flowing locks.

In reality summertime comes with certain hair hazards like chlorine, UV rays, salt water and humidity which then leads to the dreaded pool hair, fried scalps and frizzy dried out hair.

The first and most important step to healthy hair in the summer is maintenance and prevention. When you know that you are going to be spending lengthy periods of time in direct sunlight it is advisable to get into the habit of protecting your hair and scalp.

The easiest way to do this is by wearing a hat or head scarf. This not only prevents sunburn at the scalp but also prevents damage caused by harmful UVA/UVB rays to your hair especially if your hair is colour treated as the sun will cause the colour to fade.

There are also sunscreens available for the hair which effectively helps to protect the hair against UV rays and sun damage whilst intensely hydrating or moisturizing the hair preventing it from drying out.

care tips

z Prevent colour fading by spraying hair with a UV protective product with SPF in it

z Make sure to wet your hair before going swimming – that way it won’t absorb as much salt water or chlorine

z After spending time at the pool or at the beach, use a hair mask to repair damaged hair

z Use an anti-humectant product this repels moisture from the hair helping to protect against frizziness and flyaways

z Brush it – brushing hair regularly not only keeps it free from knots but it also stimulates the circulation in the scalp which encourages blood flow to the roots of the hair

Golden rule – The longer the hair, the bigger the brush should be

z Never underestimate the power of a good trim, on average it is recommended every six to eight weeks to maintain maximum hair health
