Take a second look at Eric Ritchie

In 2015 he had his first solo exhibition after a gap of 35 years, although he never stopped painting during that time and demand for his work never wavered.

In this second exhibition, the effervescent octogenarian shows a mix of remarkable archive work along with some newly produced pieces.

A graduate from Edinburgh College of Art in the 1950s, Eric famously collaborated with Leonard Rosoman on the sell-out Diaghilev exhibition, which gained him fans from the theatrical and film world.

His work has been influenced by Miro, Klee, Picasso but there is a depth, humanity and humour in his art.

Coldingham features often in Ritchie’s paintings and some of his most appealing work stems from time spent on his brothers-in-law’s fishing boats. He has a strong sense of community and sees himself as a man who works with paint – that has even included painting the fishing boats’ registration numbers onto their bows! He recently contributed visual and creative material in the successful drive to save the St Abb’s lifeboat.
