Scratch the surface with Borders artist David Cass

There's still time to catch an exhibition by a Stow-based artist making waves in the capital.

David Cass, who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2010, is currently exhibiting ‘Surface’, a collection comprising mostly of seascapes, created in a variety of media, on ‘found’ surfaces.

In many cases these are familiar, functional objects: tabletops, drawer bases, trunk lids, roadsigns, books and papers.

Some of David’s pieces have been worked on and stored outside – exposed to weather – and then brought inside for the final layers and finishing detail.

David says: “These paintings were created over the last six years and kind of ‘chart’ my career since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art.”

He explains that water is a recurring theme of his art: “I’ve regularly returned to this image – using it as a symbol that describes travel, distance and time-passing.

“‘Surface’ is the first opportunity I’ve had to gather these ‘water paintings’ together.”

The exhibition celebrates David’s recent election to the Royal Watercolour Society. It is also helping to raise funds for a not-for-profit public exhibition in Florence in November, which David has been invited to participate in.

‘Surface’ is showing at Gayfield Creative, just off Edinburgh’s Gayfield Square, until May 3 at 6pm.

There will be an opportunity to meet David on Saturday, April 30 between 2-5pm.
